Project Brief:
As Industrial designers we have a unique ability to connect dots and situations not previously thought of. Globally we need to look at the energy crisis through a new lens. Instead of trying to solve the problem we are faced with now we will rather focus on 5 years into the future. This means the technology exists today in research or new developments and will be ready for full-scale implementation in 5 years’ time.
The City of Cape Town will be your client as they are currently looking for unique solutions. They are looking for solutions that will work within the borders of the Western Cape. Solar and wind power are well known entities and may be explored for this project, if used in a unique way or application. Building on eliminating hyper mass production as design direction, we start looking at our local and metro communities to find unique solutions within them.
These solutions, although suited to a local problem, could easily be adapted and implemented in other areas. This is a research and concept design project with quasi experiments to test specific hypotheses and a final digital prototype to illustrate your solution.
